Water use efficiency for the production of meat in irrigated systems with different levels of intensification
The aim of this study is to compare the amount of water used in primary production (t DM ha-1) and meat production (kg ha-1) in the Río Negro irrigated areas in livestock grazing dynamic models that simulate different degrees of intensification: i seasonal meat production (240 days) alfalfa based (PEO) pastures; ii Idem I maximizing the efficiency of all processes; iii annual meat production (365 days) with PEO + autumn-winter-spring (OIP) pastures; iv PEO + OIP + corn supplementation ; v Pastures PEO + double cropping (winter + summer). Model i produced 12 t DM ha-1, predicted 399 kg meat ha-1, produced 10.5 kg DM mm-1 and used 29 m3 of water meat kg-1; model ii: 19 t, 798 kg, 15 kg DM and 16 m -3, model iii: 14 t, 1188 kg, 11 kg DM and 11 m-3; model iv: 14 t, 1392 kg, 11 kg DM and 10 m 3 and model V 24 t DM ha-1, 2152 kg of meat ha-1, 18 kg DM and 6.5 m3 kg of meat-1. In conclusion, there is an wide range to increase forage production and meat in irrigated valleys of Patagonia making more efficient use of water resources.
